Winston Churchill once described Russia as a ‘riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma.’ Though Mr. Churchill’s analysis still holds true in many ways, it is also true that we have more freedom now than at any time in living memory to explore these riddles, mysteries, and enigmas. We invite you to join us on a cruise between two of Mother Russia’s most historic and influential cities, and the many pastoral sites in between. We’ll be following the Volga River and a series of connecting lakes and waterways that allow travelers to enjoy the leisurely pace of river cruising while appreciating many of the sites and villages best viewed from the water.
Highlights
- St. Petersburg (formerly Leningrad), one-time capital for the mighty Czars, and still one of Europe’s most impressive displays of traditional architecture
- St. Petersburg’s Imperial Winter Palace, host for the world- famous Hermitage Museum, the expansive art collection of the czars
- Lake Onega, one of Russia’s largest lakes, and the picturesque island of Kizhi, home to the 22 domes of the 18th century Church of the Transfiguration
- Sailing up the Moscow Channel to the lovely town of Uglich, on the shores of the Volga River
- The many sites of Moscow including the Palaces of the Kremlin, Moscow residence of the Czars; Red Square with St. Basil’s Cathedral; the Lenin Mausoleum; and an optional performance of one of Russia’s trademarks – theater, opera, ballet, or circus
