Itinerary

WALKIN’ DIXIE

It is with great delight that we announce the 2008 edition of Walkin' Dixie—Charleston to Orlando. One of our longest running North American tours has been shortened and given new dates that coincide with the ever popular biennial walking event — The Savannah Baker's Dozen in Savannah, Georgia.

This winter-time walking adventure now includes:

  • 2 nights in historic Charleston, South Carolina, one of the South's most endearing old towns
  • Charming Beaufort, South Carolina, with a plethora of stately old antebellum mansions
  • 4 nights in delightful Savannah, Georgia and The Savannah Baker's Dozen walking event
  • Jekyll Island—hideaway of the wealthiest families on the planet in the early 20th century
  • St. Augustine, Florida, the oldest city in the USA with a Spanish ambiance that dates back to Ponce de Leon and the Fountain of Youth
  • Mount Dora, Florida, one of the most attractive small cities in America and an excellent venue for a day of walking, window-shopping, walking, eating, and walking

While the rest of the country is bundled up against the arctic temperatures typical for this time of year, come on down while 2008 is still young and join us for 12 days of walks and sightseeing in the Deep South.

Itinerary

Day 1

ARRIVE CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA

Your walking adventure through our South Atlantic states begins today in Charleston, South Carolina. Because travelers will be arriving throughout the day, the only group activity planned is a “Welcome” reception this evening. We'll rendezvous in the hotel lobby at 7:30 pm and enjoy a chance to get acquainted and discuss the many Adventures yet to come.

Day 2

ACTIVITIES IN CHARLESTON (B,D)
Colonial Charleston Walk 10 km, rated 1

Charleston is a historic southern port town renowned for its colonial architecture. A full day is needed to appreciate the many educational stops, irresistible shops, and innumerable photo ops along our walk route. Travelers may also consider one of several optional harbor tours, such as a visit to Fort Sumter, where the first shots of the Civil War were fired. This evening, a more traditional form of transport takes us through colonial Charleston to dinner…by horse and carriage.

Day 3

CHARLESTON - SAVANNAH, GEORGIA (B)
Beaufort, Bell of the South Walk 10 km, rated 1

First stop today is a historical icon of gracious southern living - Magnolia Plantation & Gardens. Our next destination is the picturesque old port town of Beaufort, venue for today's walk. Enjoy the classic antebellum homes, quaint town center, and nostalgic waterfront that have made Beaufort a popular movie setting and earned it recognition from the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
