The name “Alaska” comes from the Aleut word “Alyeska,” meaning “the great land.” Spending a few days exploring our 49th state provides an abiding appreciation for how the Aleuts felt about this land of bountiful and teeming waterways, dense forests, expansive plains of tundra, and towering mountain ranges.
Although cruising is not normally our chosen mode of transport to share an Adventure, Alaska's Inside Passage warrants an exception. In addition to the fact that little of this part of North America is accessible by means other than air or sea, the labyrinth of islands and channels along Alaska and British Columbia's western coast lends itself perfectly to a relaxing and scenic cruise. So beware of the notorious cruise ship culinary largesse, but enjoy the fun with wonderful shore excursions, educational naturalist lectures, and the chance to unpack your bags for a 7-night stay!
