This 2006 walking adventure brings together the best of the Italy segments we have used with our Walking France & Italy tour in recent years. We’ll begin in Venice, with a full day to walk and explore this romantic city of canals and bridges from which most of the Mediterranean trade into Europe was controlled during the Middle Ages. We’ll spend two nights in timeless Cinque Terre, on the picturesque shores of the Ligurian Sea, then two nights in magical Florence, capital of the Renaissance and studio of creativity to artistic giants like Michelangelo and Giotto. After stops in the charming medieval hill towns of Siena, Orvieto, and Civita in Tuscancy and Umbria, we’ll spend our last three nights in the eternal city of Rome. An unforgettable visit to the Vatican Museum, with the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica, will be followed by a walk providing up-close and personal exposure to all the sights of renowned that you associate with Rome: Piazza Navarone, Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, the Spanish Steps, the Ancient Forum, and of course, the Colosseum.

Travelers opting for the extension to Malta will fly from Rome to this tiny Mediterranean island nation for three more days of walks and exploration. What we find in Malta will probably surprise you; in addition to some spectacular sea cliff walks, we’ll experience the cultural influences of the ages, since Malta has been a crossroads for all Mediterranean shipping from time immemorial, but also impressive archeological artifacts that predate even the pyramids of Egypt.
