Itinerary

Edinburgh Plus the
Highlands & Islands of Scotland

Not Currently Being Offered

Edinburgh Plus the Highlands & Islands of Scotland is a delightful survey of the stark beauty and colorful history of Scotland. The heather should be in bloom for our highlands walks, and the tiny island of Iona, in the Inner Hebrides, is a wondrous place of solitude and beauty. For many, however, the highlight of the tour will be exploring Edinburgh on an all-day walk, then returning in the evening for the world-famous Edinburgh Military Tattoo. This spellbinding evening of music and dance, performed on the esplanade of the Edinburgh Castle, has been a perennial favorite for past WAI groups.

Itinerary

Day 1

ARRIVE EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND

You'll arrive today at the Edinburgh Airport and be transferred to our nearby hotel. Here you'll rendezvous with other travelers eager to explore Edinburgh plus the Highlands & Islands of Scotland.

Day 2

EDINBURGH-PITLOCHRY
Pitlochry Mountains & Moors Trail 10 km, rated 2+

Departing Edinburgh, we'll head north by motorcoach through Perthshire and into the dramatic highland scenery surrounding Pitlochry, an attractive town of stone cottages and shops in the Tummel Valley. Our walk here is a nature trail amongst the mountains and moors of bonny Scotland. Following the walk, you'll have time to browse the shops and enjoy the ambiance of this pleasant Scottish highland town.

Day 3

PITLOCHRY-OBAN
Aviemore Highland Heather Trail 11 km, rated 2+

Today's trek near Aviemore takes us through woods and across heather-clad hills with more enchanting highland panoramas. Only small doses of imagination are required to picture scenes from the Broadway musical Brigadoon unfolding all around us. From Aviemore, our journey continues deeper into the highlands, through Inverness, and along the fabled Loch Ness to Oban.

Day 4

ACTIVITIES FROM OBAN

A morning ferry ride to the Isle of Mull will be followed by a cross-island drive. From the village of Fionnphort, a pedestrian ferry ride takes us to the tiny, windswept Isle of Iona, the birthplace of Christianity in Scotland. What a rare opportunity to wander this breathtakingly beautiful and remark- ably remote corner of the Hebrides!

Day 5

OBAN-EDINBURGH
Glencoe Trail of Tears 10 km, rated 2 (non-sanctioned)

Today's trail wanders through the valley of Glencoe, a place of stark highland beauty and the site of heartbreaking clan treach- ery and tragedy in the 17th century. The visitor center film provides insight into the "Murder under Trust" perpetrated here between the McDonalds and the Campbell's. From Glencoe, we pass through more wild highland vistas toward our golf resort hotel just outside Edinburgh.

Day 6

ACTIVITIES IN EDINBURGH
Edinburgh Trail 10 km, rated 2

Positioned on a strategic promontory, 7th-century Edinburgh Castle is the centerpiece for today's walk that features the castle, the Palace of Holyroodhouse, and the Royal Mile, with Greyfriar's Bobby, the John Knox House, and a host of other only-in-Edinburgh attractions. Following dinner, we'll attend the world-famous Edinburgh Military Tattoo, a musical march- ing extravaganza that is easily the most popular entertainment excursion offered on any WAI tour.

Day 7

EDINBURGH-USA

Our Scottish walking adventure ends today with a flight back across the Big Pond. We'll return home with happy memories of Edinburgh and the unforgettable landscapes and legends of Scotland's highlands and islands.
